Fraud Detection

Aim: To train client staff in the ways in which fraud can be detected.

Content: The course will cover the following:

 

  1. An understanding of the nature of fraud;

  2. The fraud risk model and the inter-dependency of its different components;

  3. Knowledge of the terminology involved in fraud detection;

  4. Constructing a fraud detection strategy;

  5. The National Intelligence Model;

  6. The recording and management of fraud intelligence;

  7. Threat Impact and vulnerability assessments;

  8. An understanding of the reasons why fraud can be difficult to detect;

  9. The difference between informants and whistleblowers;

  10. The law and standards relating to whistleblowing in England and Wales;

  11. The creation and management of whistleblowing arrangements;

  12. The importance of control systems in the detection of fraud;

  13. The main types of control used to detect fraud and their limitations;

  14. The role of data analytics in fraud detection;

  15. The construction of data analytic rules to detect frauds;

  16. Difficulties with interpreting the information produced by data analytics;

  17. The different roles performed by internal and external audit in the detection of fraud;

  18. An overview of international Standard of Auditing 240 on the auditor’s responsibilities relating to fraud in an audit of financial statements;

  19. Writing an annual fraud detection report.

Tools Supplied: PowerPoint slides. A fully worked through case study (with suggested answers) which will include templates for: a fraud detection strategy and annual report; the implementation of the fraud risk management model, impact threat and vulnerability assessments and for the construction of fraud detection rules. The intention is for course participants to be able to use these templates to implement what they have learned when they return to their workplace and thus help client organisations obtain the best value from the course.

Target Audience: Staff working in fraud risk management and / or internal audit teams.

Venue: To be delivered at in hired premises – for example a hotel conference room.

​

Numbers Attending: Numbers will be limited to 12 per course to encourage maximum participation from each course member and allow the instructor to give sufficient time to each course member.

Duration: 3 days.
